This airport is very easy to get in and out of if you
are flying locally. You can be off your plane and in
your car or taxi and on the road in five to seven
minutes. The drive into Patong or Phuket Town will take
about 30 minutes if driven at a reasonable speed. To
the Laguna Resorts and Bang Tao Beach/Surin areas will
be about 15-25 minutes. Up to Natai Beach, 15
minutes, Thai Muang, 25 minutes. Khao Lak, less than one
hour.
Metered taxis ("taxi-meters") park outside the airport,
but have a kiosk right out the arrivals doors and to the
right - down towards the end of the sidewalk (about 50
meters).
Ask for an estimate on the metered cost - negotiate
with one of the "limousine" services.
Transport to the Laguna Resorts area, NorthEast Phuket
and Mai Khao Beach areas will generally cost less than
B500 in a metered taxi. Tipping is usually the small
change that is left over, or around 10%, whatever you
prefer. Prices can change, be sure to check.
Negotiated rate taxis - the people who solicit you as
you leave the arrivals area - will usually cost about
20% more than the metered taxis. These are often nicer
and roomier cars though and they can also arrange a
larger vehicle on short notice for families are larger
groups. These are can be a better deal than a
metered taxi if you are going a long way - perhaps up to
Khao Lak or over to Krabi. Don't get in a
negotiated rate vehicle or put your luggage in one -
until you have settled on a price. It you are
already in the car and look quite comfortable - you can
guess that the price will go up.
